Geometry is everywhere, not just in pyramids. Engineers use geometry to build highways and bridges. Artists use geometry to create perspective in their paintings, and mapmakers help travelers find things using the points located on a geometric grid. Throughout this course, students travel a mathematical highway illuminated by spatial relationships, reasoning, connections, and problem solving. Prerequisites: Geometry A

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to...

  • Use the distance formula and slope formula to categorize quadrilaterals and triangles
  • Use slope to prove lines are parallel or perpendicular and write an equation of a line that is parallel or perpendicular to a given point
  • Use coordinates to find perimeter and area of polygons
  • Explain how right triangles lead to the definitions of trigonometric ratios
  • Identify trigonometric ratios and their inverses and use these ratios to solve for missing sides or angles of right triangles
  • Explain how the formulas for the circumference of a circle, area of a circle, volume of a cylinder, volume of a pyramid, and volume of a cone are derived
  • Explain what a 2-dimensional cross section of a 3-dimensional object looks like
  • Explain the relationship among radii, chords, tangents, and inscribed/circumscribed angles
  • Prove properties of angles for a quadrilateral inscribed in a circle
  • Identify the center and radius of a circle, as well as other properties of a circle

Scoring System: Michigan Virtual does not assign letter grades, grant credit for courses, nor issue diplomas. A final score out of total points earned will be submitted to your school mentor for conversion to their own letter grading system. Time Commitment: Semester sessions are 18-weeks long: Students must be able to spend 1 or more hours per day in the course to be successful. Summer sessions are 10 weeks long: Students must be able to spend a minimum of 2 or more hours per day, or about 90 hours during the summer, for the student to be successful in any course. Trimester sessions are 12-weeks long: Students must be able to spend 1.5 or more hours per day in the course to be successful.

Technology Requirements: Students will require a computer device with headphones, a microphone, webcam, up-to-date Chrome Web Browser, and access to YouTube.

Lightweight devices such as Apple iPads, Google Chromebooks, and tablets have limited support for Java or Flash which still appear in a small percentage of our catalog. Required Assessment: Online assessments consist of formative and summative assessments represented by computer-graded multiple choice, instructor-graded writing assignments including hands-on projects, model building and other forms of authentic assessments.

Technical Skills Needed: No special skills are required beyond being able to operate a computer and use word processing software.
