Exploring a World of Languages

Enrollment Message:

Students will need a computer device with headphones, a microphone, webcam, up-to-date Chrome Web Browser, and access to YouTube. Students must possess a working microphone and webcam on their device in order to record and submit audio and video files using either the embedded recording tools within the Brightspace learning management system or another means of recording and submitting audio and video files for world language performance assessments.

In this course, students will experience a variety of world languages especially relevant to those who live in North America. After exploring how languages are learned and how “families” of world languages are connected to one another, students will explore the basics of German (a historical relative of English), Spanish (the 2nd most spoken language in the U.S. and a predominant language in Central/South America to our south), French (an official language of Canada, our neighbor to the north), and American Sign Language or ASL (an American dialect of a non-verbal language). The purpose of this course is for students to experience firsthand some of the similarities and differences among four important world languages so that they are ready to make an informed decision about which language they may wish to study to fulfill their Michigan Merit High School Graduation Requirements and so that they feel confident and excited about continuing their language studies. The content and assessments align with the Michigan Merit Curriculum World Languages Standards and Benchmarks. Prerequisites:  None
