Enrollment Message:

Text, workbook purchase required; see Additional Costs. Student may take placement test from Michigan State University. If student scores above 80% accuracy on placement level (e.g., score above 80% on 1B), then we recommend enrolling in next higher level (e.g., enroll in 2A). Student may switch levels in first 2 weeks of term per instructor recommendation. Student must sign up for weekly lab session; must have headset with earphones, microphone when attending lab. This course is the first in a two-course sequence and is designed for students who have at least 2-3 years of prior experience in learning Chinese. This course focuses on cultivating students’ skills in using more advanced vocabulary and more complex sentence structures to express themselves through project-based language learning activities. Topics in this level include making friends, computers and the Internet, working part-time, education, and major Chinese cities. Using a flipped design, students will be instructed to complete preview and review activities asynchronously with a suggested pacing-guide. Students are also required to take a 50-minute lab session per week and interact with their instructor and classmates for synchronous learning. Prerequisites:  Chinese 3A or at least 2-3 years of Chinese language learning

Scoring System: Michigan Virtual does not assign letter grades, grant credit for courses, nor issue diplomas. A final score out of total points earned will be submitted to your school mentor for conversion to their own letter grading system.

Time Commitment: Semester sessions are 18-weeks long: Students must be able to spend 1 or more hours per day in the course to be successful.

Required Assessment: Online assessments consist of formative and summative assessments represented by computer-graded multiple choice, instructor-graded writing assignments including hands-on projects, model building and other forms of authentic assessments.

Technical Skills Needed: Basic technology skills necessary to locate and share information and files as well as interact with others in a Learning Management System (LMS), include the ability to:

  • Download, edit, save, convert, and upload files
  • Download and install software
  • Use a messaging service similar to email
  • Communicate with others in online discussion or message boards, following basic rules of netiquette
  • Open attachments shared in messages
  • Create, save, and submit files in commonly used word processing program formats and as a PDF
  • Edit file share settings in cloud-based applications, such as Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides
